Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
