Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
