European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
