The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Response
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a clearer vision.
The president stated that the team is now refining the project with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Hires
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the full text from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the potential of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It revealed the need for a clearer brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to consideration and reimagined the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After some time of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
His leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all excited to continue witnessing the development of the game in the months to follow.
David
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a early access event. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Take on the competition with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that change every match. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, risk it all, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The option is yours."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or platforms, but enthusiasts can expect more updates as creation advances.
